Subject: MAGICAL JOURNEYS
Dear Friends,
Due to unforseen circumstances which have necessitated a major revision
of our plans, we would like to give you updated information about our
projects for this autumn which are building on the work in which we have
participated in the Czech Lands since 1995, including 'The Rosicrucian
Enlightenment Revisited' and 'Prague, Alchemy and the Hermetic
Tradition' Conferences and last year's Magical Tour in Bohemia.
We invite you to join us on one of these truly unique journeys which
will offer extraordinary opportunities to explore the rich residue of a
truly golden period in these beautiful, magical lands, both on an
exoteric and esoteric level.
Whether or not you are able to travel with us at this time we would
appreciate if you could pass this information to friends who might be
interested.
Please note that this information, except the day-to-day itineraries
which *are* included here, is also available, with illustrations, on our
mirror web-sites!

P.S. PLEASE NOTE THAT I WILL BE AWAY AT A DEE COLLOQUIUM IN HUNGARY FROM
THE 11th -24th JULY.
(I'll be presenting a paper on Westonia the poet who was also the
step-daughter of Edward Kelley)
======================================================= MAGICAL JOURNEYS
FOR 1998
In conjunction with Dr Antonin, librarian of the Castle Libraries and a
Licensed Travel Consultant in the Czech Republic, and with IKON
Productions of England we are offering this year two tours in the Czech
lands:
THE GOLDEN SALAMANDER:
THE SILVER AND THE GOLD, AN EXPLORATION OF THE ROMANCE, MAGIC AND
MYSTERY OF MINING, METALLURGY AND TRANSMUTATION IN THE CZECH LANDS AND
SLOVAKIA.
September 5th - 14th
Led by Stanislas Klossowski de Rola, assisted by Dr Lubos Antonin,
Michal Pober and others.
The Legend of the Golden Salamander and the festival that celebrates it
each year in the historic mining town of Banska Stiavnica, nestled in
the mountains of Central Slovakia, will be the climax of our tour, which
will explore the extraordinary, unique and romantic history of mining,
metallurgy and alchemical transmutation in this region from Celtic times
to the present. One version of Czech History says that the land was so
rich in mineral wealth that there was no need for alchemy till a late
date! Nevertheless we will discover that mining, metallurgy and alchemy
went very much hand in hand. We will explore the roles played by
Giorgius Agricola, author of De Re Metallica, a physician who lived in
the silver-mining town Jachymov, formerly known as Joachimsthal and the
source of the word dollar. [Thal - thaler - dollar]; Lazarus Ercker, the
mintmaster of Kutna Hora, whose beautifully illustrated original texts,
published in German, we will be able to examine; Ignac Born, the
mintmaster of Prague, who also spent time in Banska Stiavnica.
And in the alchemical realm Stanislas will explore with us extraordinary
accounts of the transmutations performed by Kelley and Sendivogius
amongst others and we will meet with renowned physicist Dr Vladimir
Karpenko, whose interests have led him to explore 'alchemical gold' and
reach some intriguing conclusions.
Our footsteps will lead us from Prague to the magnificent small city of
Kutna Hora, and an initiatory descent into a silver mine. We will also
visit the famous Ossuary, or 'Bone Church' and the future home of the
Alchemy Museum. On to gritty but fascinating Pribram, where the first
thousand metre deep mine in the world was located, charming Pisek on the
gold-bearing Otava River, Kasperske Hory in the unspoilt Sumava
mountains that border Austria. Here we'll have an opportunity to pan for
gold in the Losenice stream where the Celts were finding gold 2,200
years ago and to explore a Celtic hill-fort, the Giants' Castle. Finally
then to the delightful small Slovak town of Banska Stiavnica where, with
the denizens of a dozen small communities, we will participate in the
revelry of the Salamander, celebrating the legendary source of a
thousand years of gold-mining. Time permitting we will also visit
Kremnice and find miner's houses whose back-doors lead directly into the
silver-mines! On the return journey we'll visit, in Moravia, the deepest
and most spectacular caves in the Czech lands.
A day-by-day itinerary is available on request and will be sent to all
registrants.
The cost of this trip is $1460 excluding transport to and from Prague.
[Single rooms, when available carry a supplementary charge]
REVISED ITINERARY, PERSONNEL AND DATES!! LONGER JOURNEY & REDUCED COST!!
A MAGICAL TOUR IN BOHEMIA AND POLAND
THE MYSTERIOUS WORLD OF JOHN DEE AND EDWARD KELLEY
September 24th - October 2nd 1998
A Co-Created Journey, Co-ordinated by Michal Pober with the
participation of Geoffrey James, of Lubos Antonin in Prague, and Rafal
Prinke in Cracow.
This will be a small-group tour, maximum 12 participants, which will
follow the progress of Dee and Kelley from their arrival in Cracow to
Kelley's imprisonment in the Gothic Fortress of Krivoklat. The primary
focus will be on the period that Dee and Kelley were together, their
adventures with Rudolf II in Prague and with the Rozmberks in the
beautiful South Bohemian towns Cesky Krumlov and Trebon. We will explore
the dynamic of the relationship between the two and their Angel Magick
using as texts Casaubon's 'A True and Faithful Relation..' and Geoffrey
James' Books 'Enochian Magick' and 'Angel Magic' published by Llewellyn
Books. (All participants will receive complimentary signed copies of
Geoffrey's Books.) Dr Antonin will assist our Prague explorations and in
Cracow, the most beautiful preserved historic city in Poland, we will
meet with Rafal Prinke of Poznan who has some exciting new discoveries
about Dee and Kelley's movements and activities there.
The cost of this journey is $980 excluding transport to and from Prague.
[Single rooms, when available carry a supplementary charge]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
General Information Regarding the Journeys:
Both journeys are designed to offer an opportunity to explore in depth
historic and ongoing esoteric aspects of this extraordinary region, a
crucible of change and transformation with golden historical periods,
during which Prague shone as the artistic, scientific and cultural Heart
of Europe. At the same time they will support an individual inner
journey of the spirit. Our aim is to furnish the richest and most
fascinating experience of these extraordinary times and places.
The Journeys will be co-ordinated by Michal Pober, the guarantor of
comfortable, interesting lodgings, food, transportation and all
logistical necessities, assisted by Dr Antonin who has an extraordinary
grasp in depth and breadth of the history, culture and literature of the
Czech lands, and especially of alchemical texts and manuscripts.
The Salamander Tour will be led by the renowned author and hermetic
luminary Stanislas Klossowski de Rola while the Dee/Kelley Journey will
invite a process of co-creation with the assistance of Geoffrey James
and Rafal Prinke as co-participants. In the places we visit we have
on-going relationships with local people who share our interests and
will act as local guides.
All accomodations will be in 3 or 4 star hotels, superior Pensions or
Castles, and in twin-bed rooms. Single rooms and rooms with double beds
will sometimes be available but cannot always be guaranteed. Restaurants
have been hand-picked for excellence! Transportation will be by
comfortable air-conditioned coach. Usually travel time will not exceed 3
hours per day with the exception of the journeys to Cracow and Slovakia.
Prices include all accomodations, three meals a day, transportation,
airport transfers admissions; all expenses apart from personal purchases
and beverages.
For personal expenses travellers'checks/cheques are not recommended
outside Prague. Credit cards are accepted in many places and Bank cards
[Cirrus or Plus networks] are a highly preferred way to access funds at
far better exchange rates than banks. There are cash machines right at
the airport. Otherwise safely guarded dollars, pounds and
deutschmarks, etc., can always be changed. The ubiquitous exchange booths
and hotels are not recommended. Exchange in Poland for hard currencies
is advantageous.
All trips commence and conclude in Prague. Visas are not required to the
Czech Republic, Slovakia or Poland for residents of the E.U., U.S. or
Canada. If you are coming from another country please check with your
travel agent.
The trips will be fairly adventurous and require a reasonable degree of
health and fitness.
We recommend that you take out travel insurance, including health, for
your own protection.
Also please keep luggage to a minimum. There will be times when carrying
luggage for three or for hundred yards cannot be avoided. The weather
should be mild, with the likelihood of cool evenings, especially in the
mountains. There will be no occasions when formal dress will be required
We will also try to arrange economical accomodations for people who wish
to arrive earlier or stay longer. The longer advance warning we have the
easier that will be.
Please don't hesitate to contact us about custom journeys for
individuals or groups of any size in the Czech lands and Slovakia. We
can cater to a wide variety of interests and if we can't help you
directly we can refer you to someone who can.

======================================================= Letter from
Central Slovakia
Edward Cullen
Doing the salamander
It is Friday afternoon and the start of a holiday weekend. Suddenly I
understand what the bugle calls that have issued all week from the
Tannoys in town must mean. Of course! The salamander is coming! There is
a legend here about a salamander. Years ago, a shepherd, sitting out
with his flock through the heat of a scorching summer day, became aware
of a salamander sitting in the shade beside him. Time passed, the sheep
nibbled lazily at the grass and the sun moved higher. All at once, or so
it seemed to the shepherd, the shadows slipped away and the salamander
lay in the full gaze of the sun, and it glistened and sparkled like
gold. Stunned, the shepherd crept closer and realised that the
salamander was covered with gold dust. He reached out to touch the
creature but it slipped away between the rocks. When the shepherd came
down from the hills and told his story, the people realised for the
first time that there were riches buried in their hills. This, the story
goes, was how the face of the countryside, and the fate of the people
who lived in this mountainous region of Slovakia, were transformed. Gold
and silver mining developed rapidly and brought prosperity for the next
thousand years. Now the mines are closed, but every year the people
remember and celebrate the salamander. The celebration lasts for two days
and draws people from the surrounding villages and even further afield.
The main square is filled with a street market and spills over as people
move from stall to stall, eating the food and drinking the alcohol for
sale. Some stalls sell beer but most sell home-produced (and often
cloudy) white wine. At one side of the cobbled square a stage is set up
for folk singing and dancing, choirs and bands. By early evening, the
air is heavy with the scent of wine and there is plenty of evidence of
serious drinking. More and more people arrive, streaming up the hill
from the lower part of town to watch the salamander procession. This is
timed to reach the square just as night falls and is the major event of
the festival. For a kilometre in each direction, the main street leading
up to the square is thick with spectators. As the leading groups in the
procession come into view, you begin to see how it works. The
participants move forward and stop, move forward and then stop again.
They travel in long curves, from side to side up the road, narrowing
until they are walking in file, then opening out once again, all in
imitation of the movements of the salamander. This pattern only becomes
apparent after watching for quite a while. The procession is so long and
each constituent part so different. More than 30 different groups, each
representing a village, mining community or lodge take part, and most
groups have their own brass band or troupe of musicians. As each section
of the salamander comes to a pause in the movement, they dance or sing
or play. A whole village (or so it seems) of male voices sings echoing,
resonant songs. They sing and sing until the tune is taken up by the
crowd and hundreds of voices are raised in unison. It is stirring stuff.
And then the procession moves on and scores of miners lanterns swing and
splutter into the grainy dusk. Dancing girls, decorated horses and
carts, brass bands, folk singers and dancers all pass by as the
salamander winds its way up the hill. Each time a group stops to
perform, another moves on. Interspersed along the line, veteran miners
and their families dressed in traditional costume march raggedly,
holding up the banners of their villages. A cone-shaped copper cannon
mounted on a gun-carriage is hauled all the way. At intervals it is
pointed at the crowd, and young lads throw firecrackers into the barrel.
These explode with piercing echoes. There is cheering and applause,
singing and laughter. And everywhere, everyone is drinking, spectators
and participants alike -- the last few groups in the procession
glassy-eyed. Yet I never once see money changing hands. This is a moment
for tradition and drunken glory alone.
